Howard County and Russian Jewish immigrants

A small community of 29 Russian Jewish families started farms near Hollofield on the old "Brosenna" estate.  The following articles from The Baltimore Sun, Sept. 17, 1905 and Aug. 3, 1906.

The Sun  Aug 3, 1906 -
"RUSSIA IN MARYLAND: Colonists In Howard County Live As In Fatherland. LIBERTY THE ONLY DIFFERENCE. Rabbi Tobias Goodman Is The Venerated Head--Habits Of Industry And Frugality Inculcated."

Three miles west of EC on the B&O line, the Brosenna land had been considered for a race track.   Most of the 29 families had arrived from Russia three years earlier and settled in Baltimore.

Frederic Brosenna was "a farmer of Carroll’s Manor" - Doughoregan. In 1887 "F. Brosenna, Ellicott City" inspection by Bureau of Animal Industry had 61 cattle in stable, none with lung plague. His daughter Louisa Brosenna married in 1863 to Henry Cook, a "cattle denier" born in Germany.
