Civil War female spies and their connection to the Patapsco Female Institute

Patapsco Female Institute had at least two connections to famous Civil War Confederate female spies.  Two daughters of Rose O'Neal Greenbow were students.  Clara Haxall Randolph Howard married the grandson of John Eager Howard and was a cousin of Sarah Randolph, the last principal of the school.

Rose O’Neal Greenhow (1817–1864) born on a Maryland plantation, was a renowned spy in Washington, DC.  Two of her daughters attended the Patapsco Female Institute:  Gertrude (1838-1861) and Leila (1840-1886).  During the war, Leila was sent to live with her sister in Ohio, who was married to a Union officer, a graduate of West Point.

Clara Haxall Randolph Howard (1831-1913) a cousin to Sarah Randolph (the last principal of the Patapsco Female Institute) was arrested in Baltimore in 1863 as a spy. Clara married William Key Howard, the grandson of Howard County namesake John Eager Howard. Her father was Thomas Mann Randolph II, the much younger half-brother of Thomas Mann Randolph, Jr. (the son-in-law of Thomas Jefferson and grandfather of Sarah).  They moved into "Kenmore" (home of sister of George Washington) in 1881.

  1. I love your blog! Great stuff!
Did Clara Haxall Randolph Howard ever live in or near Ellicott City, or is her only connection that she was the cousin of Sarah?

    1. When she married Wm Howard of Baltimore in 1860, she moved up from Virginia for a few years, then the family went to Virginia. Her cousin was teaching in Virginia at that time, and Wm's uncle Gov George Howard of Waverly in Howard County had died by then. So I doubt she came to EC, except perhaps as a tourist.
