The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad 1836 - in French

The new B & O Railroad made the international news as seen in this excerpt from a French book. 



Chemin de fer de Baltimore à l'Ohio.

Le chemin de fer de Baltimore à l'Ohio part de l'intérieur même de la ville de Baltimore, d'un grand bassin ou port, où les marchandises sont amenées à quai, par force animale , depuis la station principale hors ville. C'est de cette dernière station que commence le transport des voyageurs par locomotives.

[The Baltimore railroad to Ohio runs from within the city of Baltimore itself, from a large basin or port, where goods are brought to the wharf by animal force from the main out-of-town station. It is from this last station that the transport of passengers by locomotives begins.]

De cette station hors ville le chemin traverse , sur un très-beau viaduc en assises régulières, la petite rivière de Maiden-Choice, et vient, en suivant une direction sud, gagner la vallée du Patapsco, près de la forge d'Ellicott ; il remonte alors cette vallée sur la rive gauche jusqu'au moulin de Thistle, où il traverse la rivière du Patapsco pour suivre sa rive droite jusqu'au-dessus des ruisseaux qui forment les Piney-Falls ;traversant de nouveau le Patapsco, il continue sur la rive gauche jusqu'à ses sources.

[From this station off the town the road crosses, on a very beautiful viaduct in regular seating, the little river of Maiden-Choice, and comes, following a southerly direction, to reach the valley of Patapsco, near the forge of Ellicott; it then goes up this valley on the left bank to the mill of Thistle, where it crosses the Patapsco river to follow its right bank to the top of the streams which form the Piney-Falls; crossing again the Patapsco, it continues on the left bank to its sources.]
